How to Plan a Styled Shoot That Sells Your Brand (Even on a Start-Up Budget)
When you’re launching a product-based business, a styled shoot can be the difference between your brand looking DIY and your brand looking ready to sell. Styled shoots aren’t just about pretty pictures, they tell a story, set the tone for your business and show customers how your products fit into their lives.
But if you’re a start-up, I know budgets are tight. Most of the brands I work with are frugal in the beginning and rightly so. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your aesthetic.
Right now I’m working with Em, a founder preparing to launch a clothing line for her latest passion project and it’s a total vibe! She wants the full Rebel Black Studio treatment, photography, styling and art direction. When the full package wasn’t within reach this time, we stripped it back. But I’m not letting her go into the shoot unprepared. I’ve armed her with a framework so when we shoot in October, the imagery will still feel cohesive, scroll-stopping and on-brand.
Here’s how we’re planning it…
Rebel Black Moodboard.
Moodboards still matter and even without me handling every styling detail, I’ve created moodboards to guide Em’s prep. These give her a clear direction on colour palettes, props, and textures, so she knows what to source in advance and how to keep the shoot consistent.
Garment Prep is Non-Negotiable.
I’ve made sure Em has a checklist for clothing care. That mean:
Steam and iron everything before shoot day.
Keep garments lint-free and fresh (hoodies especially).
Source co-ordinated blanks from the same wholesaler, even if they won’t be sold, so the colour tones align in the final imagery.
We’re simplifying the studio set up because at first planned for window-cast shadow play, but I’ve suggested swapping to a disco-ball light effect with props I already have in storage. It’ll give us a unique look while keeping things budget friendly.
Planning like a pro.
Small Details Make a Big Difference.
I’ve advised Em to brief her models on:
Nails neat and neutral.
No hairbands on wrists.
Clean trainers (because dirty shoes can ruin an otherwise perfect image).
Tapping Into Her Own Community.
Rather than paying for models, Em has put a call out to her existing clients that she’s planning to market this too. They’re already aligned with her brand and excited to be part of the launch, which means more authentic, real-feel imagery.
Lighting vibes.
What makes this work isn’t just the photos, it’s the planning. My role is to help founders see what they might miss and to prove you don’t always need a huge budget to get brand imagery that sells. Whether I’m handling the full styling or giving you the tools to prep yourself, the goal stays the same: making your products look irresistible.
